ㅤ✅ Take-home message of study:
Can you tell me about a study that examined the management practices of acute urinary retention in men with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH)?
ㅤ Prospective, cross-sectional survey
ㅤ
Study participants:
Number included: 6074 men
Inclusion criteria:
Men with acute urinary retention due to BPH
ㅤ
ㅤ
Key study outcomes:
Presence of BPH was revealed by acute urinary retention in 44% of men.
Hospitalization for acute urinary retention varies from 1.7% in Algeria to 100% in France
A urethral catheter was inserted in most cases (89.8%) followed by a trial without catheter in 78% after a median of 5 days.
Overall trial without catheter success was 61%
Catheterization for > 3 days does not influence success rate but is associated with increased comorbidity such as prolonged hospitalization.
ㅤ
ㅤ
Study Limitations:
The results of the French survey had already been published before the study
Because this is a cross-sectional study - causal inference cannot be ascertained
Practice between countries can vary hugely
